- 条件文句に用いられたwere to叙想法と叙想法未来（叙想法代用のshould + 原形不定詞）とを比較考察しなさい。 設題で与えられた比較考察をする前に、まず条件文句とは何か、その定義付けから始める。条件文句は条件の副詞文句とも呼ばれ、接続詞ifやunless(= if …not)のほか、群接動詞on condition (that), in case (that), suppose(= supposing)(that), provided (that), granted (that)などや、口語ではso only, so that, so long as（いずれもif onlyと同義）などに導かれる文章のことである。つまり条件文句とは、「もし～ならば・・・だ」という文章の、「もし～ならば」の部分であると捉えれば間違いはないであろう。 条件文句の述語動詞は、その帰結、つまり主文句の述語動詞と関連させて考えなければならない。条件文句と主文句からなる分を条件文というが、この条件文は以下の3種類に分類される。 或る事を事実として、一般論として仮定して、そこから帰結を引き出す文。条件文句

- Thomas A. Edison is supposed to have parried the question of a skeptic who wanted to know what one of his fledgling inventions was good for by asking “What good is a baby?” ＊＊ is supposed to 〜 でshouldと同様の「～した方が良い、～すべき」というmodalityの意味となる。have parried のparriedは過去分詞系で、haveに続くことによって述語動詞の役割で後に続くthe questionを目的語とした、過去完了の「受け流した」の意味を表す。また、of a skepticで同目的語をthe question を修飾限定し、Who～（主格の関係代名詞）以降でa skeptic を連体修飾している。what 〜（名詞節を作る関係代名詞） は前置詞 for の目的格となる。"What good is a baby?"部分は、疑問文の直接引用でasking の目的語に値する。ちなみに、このgoodは形容詞ではなく、名詞のgoodであり、isはその補語である。
