    資料紹介

So far, we examined Ishiguro’s short stories and first three novels. The first and the second novels were set in Japan that Ishiguro had not seen for almost 30 years and mainly deal with Japanese. Then, why did Ishiguro try to write the third novel, The Remains of the Day as an England oriented one? To answer this question, we will see the relationship between Ishiguro and Japan which will clarify the transition of Ishiguro’s own identity.
After he moved to London at the age of five, how did he keep on touching Japanese culture? Though it was said that Ishiguro couldn’t read Chinese character at all and understand Japanese very well, his parents continued the Japanese side of his education. Every month for years a parcel of Japanese comics and magazines would arrive from Japan and he had to plow through them. As they didn’t expect to stay in London long-term, his mother thought it is necessary for him to remember Japanese. Also, he himself used to read many books written by famous Japanese novelists such as Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima and Souseki Natsume via an English translation. (Later, he contributed an Introduction for Kawabata’s novel. ) In addition to the books, his interest in Japanese culture passed over a film shot by Yasujiro Ozu who was one of the typical Japanese oriented directors. Among his films, Ishiguro’s favorite was Tokyo Story, because this film reminded him of his infancy in Nagasaki.
