    What is Kyudo?
    Do you know Japanese archery? This sport is not popular at the moment but it has been done since long time ago in Japan. Actually, I belonged to the Japanese archery club when I was high school student. So I'd like to tell you about Japanese archery; Kyudo which is one of Japanese traditional sports.
    Japanese archery has a long history. In the past, the bow and arrow had been used in the world for survival. More than 10,000 years ago, Japanese also had used them for hunting, war, court ceremonies, games, contests of skill and so on. This was the beginning of Japanese archery. But as time passes, the role of them in battle declined. After that, people began to regard Japanese archery as a sport. This sport is called Kyudo(弓道) in Japanese, meaning "the way of the bow." So now, kyudo is practiced primarily as a method of physical, moral, and spiritual development.
    The bow of kyudo is the longest in the world, about 221 cm and the length of arrow is about 100 cm. Though there are some ways of competition in kyudo, we usually do kinteki(近的) which means ”regular close-range shooting”. In kinteki, the distance between an archer and a target is 28 meters. And the most common target that is used in kinteki is the thirty-six-centimeter target.
    And there are eight fundamental stages of shooting in kyudo. This is called “The Syahou Hassetsu” (射法八節). ” The Syahou Hassetsu is part of one continuous sequence of movements that is important in order to shoot an arrow toward t
